|COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mike Stein (Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored four goals, while Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) and Mike Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) tallied a hat trick to help Ursinus cruise past Alvernia 22-0 in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday. |
Mangin and Stein also dished out three assists apiece, recording each of their seven points in the first half to help the Bears (2-0) jump out to a 14-0 lead en route to their first shutout since the 2003 season.
In the net, Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) made four saves in the first half, before being relieved by Austin Wisner (Parkton, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood), who made two and three saves, respectively.
Nick Yando tallied 15 saves for the Crusaders (0-2).
Similar to Wednesday’s season opener, Ursinus scored early and often.
Tori tallied the first goal just one minute, 46 seconds into the game. Sean Tillman (Phoenix, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) followed with his first goal of the season on a pass from Stein.
Tori struck again off a feed from his brother Anthony Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) at the 11:17 mark, while Stein put two straight goals away for a 5-0 lead in the first eight minutes.
Nick Shriver (Braintree, VT/Randolph-Union), Justin Reinke (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Mangin all scored to end the first quarter with an 8-0 advantage.
Mangin picked up his third point to start the second quarter with this second goal on pass from Tori, before he netted his only goal of the game at the 10:31 mark.
The Bears added four more goals in the second quarter for a total of six, including two man-up goals by Tori and Stein.
The next eight goals belonged to five freshmen, including two from Brian Boorse (Center Valley, PA/Lehigh) and Alex Gray (Glenview, IL/Glenbrooke South). Gray’s goals are his first collegiate points, along with Ian Jordan (Media, PA/Penncrest), Sam Steele (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) and Scott Boyle (Media, PA/Penncrest).
Ursinus held a 60-12 shot advantage on the afternoon, while outscoring their opponents 39-1 in its first two games of the season.
The Bears returns to action on Saturday at Roanoke. Game time is 1 p.m.
