| Bates Stops Southern Maine 13-5 PORTLAND, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats got goals from 11 players en route to a 13-5 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at Memorial Field in Portland. The win was the second in the last three games for the Bobcats and improves their overall record to 2-5. The Huskies had their three-game winning streak stopped and fall to 3-2. Junior David Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) and sophomore Pat Jackson (Durham, N.H.) had two goals apiece to lead the Bobcats. Jackson also picked up an assist. Sophomore Greg Kopeski (Westfield, Mass.) was the only other multi- point player with a goal and an assist. Senior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) and sophomore Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) paced USM with two goals. Sophomore Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H.) finished with a goal and an assist. Bates took command in the first quarter holding USM scoreless while putting three scores up on the board. Senior Sam Geller (Berkeley, Calif.), Jackson and Kopeski all found the net as Bates outshot USM 13-7. Jackson's second tally of the game made it 4-0 before Bryant put the Huskies on the board. Gilbert would score his two goals in the quarter, but the Bobcats countered with scores from freshman Mike Antoniou (Cumberland, Maine), sophomore Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Nathan Kellogg (Natick, Mass.) to make it 7-3 at halftime. The Bobcats dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 4-0 while holding the hosts without a shot. Each team scored twice in the final quarter. Senior James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) faced 53 shot attempts in the USM net, making 18 saves. Freshman Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) played the first 55 minutes before yielding to classmate Rich Bedford (Hillsdale, N.J.) for the final five minutes. Scharff was credited with three saves while Bedford posted one. Bates had a 53-21 advantage in shots attempted and a 51-31 edge in ground balls. Southern Maine opens Little East Conference play this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to Eastern Connecticut State University. Bates is on the road Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Amherst College for a NESCAC game.
