Southern Maine vs. Colby

The Game Story:
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Whit McCarthy (Darien, Conn.) scored four goals
and had two assists to help Colby College defeat the University of Southern
Maine, 13-7, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at
Hodgdon Field.
The win was the second straight, and fifth in the last six games, for the
Mules, and improved their overall record to 7-4. The Huskies dropped their
fifth consecutive game to slip to 2-7.
Sophomore Scott Margolis (New York, N.Y./Riverdale) added three goals for
the Mules, and rookie Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) chipped in with
two goals and an assist. Senior Tom Gianakos (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms)
and freshman Patrick Gilligan (Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) combined to
make five saves.
Junior Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H./ConVal) paced the Huskies offense
scoring three goals. Freshman Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) and sophomore Dan
Thomas (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each collected two assists. Sophomore goalie Kyle
Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) was busy making 18 saves.
McCarthy scored twice in the first quarter as the Mules raced out to a 4-0
lead. Deveau and sophomore Jonathan McIvor (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) had
the other goals. Dussault kept the Huskies within striking distance making six
saves as the Mules piled up a 17-4 advantage in shots during the quarter.
Senior Stew Brown (Wilton, Conn.) made it 5-0 early in the second quarter
before sophomore Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) got the Huskies on
the board, set up by White. The teams traded goals throughout the period with
the Mules holding an 8-3 lead at the halftime break.
Bryant tallied a man-down goal to pull USM within four goals midway through
the third quarter. Junior Mark Squicciarino (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Central)
got that back for the Mules with a man-up goal less than two minutes later.
McCarthy and Margolis opened the final quarter scoring 34 seconds apart to
give the Mules their largest lead of the day, 11-4.
Colby piled up a 44-34 edge in shots and a 41-26 advantage in ground balls.
Colby was outstanding clearing the ball converting 22-of-24 chances.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on
Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game. Colby will play a
NESCAC game at Amherst College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
