Eastern Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 18-7
GORHAM, Maine -- The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team displayed its offensive firepower in the second and third quarters outscoring the University of Southern Maine 13-2 en route to an 18-7 victory in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win was the third straight, and fifth in the last six games, for the league-leading Warriors. The Warriors improved their overall mark to 8-5 and remained unbeaten atop the LEC standings at 5-0. The Huskies slipped to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in conference games.

Junior Christian Leone (West Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) and senior Salieu Bolivar (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) paced the Warriors' balanced scoring with three goals apiece. Seniors Michael Sullinger (Brookfield, Conn.) and Jeremy Cogliano (Bedford, Mass.), junior Kevin Fechtmann (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) and sophomore Mike Devine (Cheshire, Conn.) each had two goals. Junior Josh Dubinsky (Woodstock, Conn./Hyde School) controlled the "X" winning 15 of 19 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 13 ground balls.

The Warriors used four goalies in the game. Senior Jamie Tommins (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) started and played the first half making five saves. Junior Drew Deane (Vernon, Conn/Rockville) played the third quarter and registered three stops. Rookies John Capodicasa (West Hartford, Conn/Conrad) and Richard Squires (Norwalk, Conn.) split the fourth quarter combining for five saves.

Freshman Kaleb Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) led the Huskies scoring two goals and dishing out an assist for three points. Five other players had one goal. Junior Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) started in the Huskies cage playing three quarters and making eight saves. Junior Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had three saves in the final quarter.

The Huskies tied the score midway through the first quarter on a score by junior Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), but that would be the last tie as the Warriors outscored the Huskies 9-3 over the remainder of the first half.

Sullinger gave the Warriors the lead for good with his first goal with 6:46 left in the first quarter. The goal sparked a run of three consecutive Warrior goals that made it 4-1 before junior Mike Orlando (Hanover, Mass.) scored for the Huskies.

Bolivar and Leone scored for the Warriors in the opening two minutes of the second period as part of a four-goal run that pushed the visitors' lead to 8-2.

The Warriors put the issue to bed in the third quarter scoring seven unanswered goals. Cogliano had a man-down goal early to ignite the run of Warrior goals. Devine and Fechtmann each scored twice, and Leone and Bolivar recorded one goal.

Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston in an LEC match. Eastern Connecticut will host in-state rival Western Connecticut State University under the lights on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
