The Game Story:
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Chris Nyman (Feeding Hills,
Mass./Agawam) scored three goals, including two during the decisive
third period, and had an assist to help the University of
Massachusetts Boston Beacons to an 11-6 victory over the University
of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's college
lacrosse game Thursday afternoon at Hodgdon Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Beacons, and
improved their record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The
Huskies drop to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Clinging to a slim 4-3 lead after USM freshman Garett Shaw
(Brunswick, Maine) scored early in the third quarter, the Beacons
scored four straight goals to take an 8-3 advantage into the final
period. Junior Robert Thayer (West Tisbury, Mass./Martha's Vineyard
Regional) and freshman Robert Black (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster
Academy) scored the first two Beacon goals before Nyman found the
net twice.
Southern Maine closed back to within three (8-5) on goals by junior
Jeff Donovan (Walpole, Mass.) and Shaw in the first six minutes of
the fourth quarter, but the Beacons scored the next three, including
two by Thayer, to pull away.
Nyman, Thayer and junior Chris Hanafin (Burlington, Mass.)
each scored three goals for the Beacons. Freshman Robert Cusack
(Braintree, Mass.) had a couple of assists.
Shaw was the lone multiple goal scorer for the Huskies with two.
Freshman Matt Manson (Leeds, Maine/St. Dominic) had a goal and an
assist for USM.
Senior goalie Jeff Lamoureux (Walpole, Mass.) finished the game
with 15 saves for USM. Junior Nick Eaton (Rowley, Mass./Ipswich)
made eight saves for the Beacons.
