| GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore Jon McCabe (Farmington, Maine) scored
five goals and added an assist and sophomore Nick Rich (Yarmouth, Maine)
added two goals and six assists, and the University of Southern Maine
Huskies held off a late rally from the visiting Salem State College Vikings
to post a 13-11 Little East Conference triumph Saturday afternoon at Paula
D. Hodgdon Field. The win was the first in LEC play for the Huskies, and they improve to 1-2 in the league and 5-5 overall, while the Vikings fell to 1-7 and 0-5. After playing to a 5-5 tie at the break, the Huskies jumped to a 12-6 advantage with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter on freshman midfielder Kurt Gagnon's (Hollis, Maine) second goal of the day. However, the Vikings rallied for five consecutive goals to pull within 12-11 on a goal by sophomore Eric Stanton (Fremont, Mass.) with 1:17 remaining in the game. Rich responded for the Huskies with his second goal and eighth point of the day with 17 seconds remaining to account for the 13-11 final. Southern Maine jumped to a 4-2 lead through one period of play, as McCabe netted an early hat trick and freshman Matt Butler (Barnstable, Mass.) added a goal. The Vikings took control in the second half, outscoring the Huskies by a 3-1 margin, to force the halftime tie. Freshman goalie Frankie Leclair (York, Maine) made 18 saves for Southern Maine, which returns to action on Thursday when it entertains Colby. Salem State, which received 13 saves from senior Matt Jewers, will host LEC-leading Eastern Connecticut on Monday. |
