| GORHAM, Maine - Senior Sean Melnick (Londonderry, N.H.) scored six
goals, including four consecutive, and added an assist to lift the visiting
University of New England Nor'Easters to a 13-8 win over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon at Paula Hodgdon Field. The win was New England's first of the year, as it improved to 1-2, while Southern Maine dipped to 4-3. Trailing 4-2 after one period of play, Southern Maine pulled to within 4-3, when freshman Matt Butler (Barnstable, MA) scored the third of his four goals just 21 seconds into the second stanza. However, New England answered with four straight goals to grab an 8-3 advantage, and took a 9-5 lead into the halftime break. Melnick, who scored two goals in the first quarter, added three straight goals before the intermission. He netted his sixth goal in the opening minutes of the third quarter to give New England a 10-5 lead. Butler pulled the Huskies to within 10-6, but New England responded with two goals from freshman Matt Vieira (South Paris, Maine) and one from freshman Juan Lozano (Portsmouth, N.H.) to take a 13-6 advantage after three quarters. Southern Maine received a pair of fourth quarter goals from freshman Kurt Gagnon (Hollis, Maine) and freshman Nick Rich (Yarmouth, Maine) to account for the 13-8 final. In goal for Southern Maine, freshman Frank Leclair (York, Maine) turned aside 15 shots, while sophomore Paul Tabor (Bristol, R.I.) had 13 saves for New England. The team's return to action on Saturday, when the Southern Maine travels to UMass-Dartmouth and New England hosts Salve Regina. |
