St. Vincent Slips Past Etown 6-5 in Blue Jaysí 2006 Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A goal with 3:06 left in the game enabled St. Vincent College to slip past Elizabethtown 6-5 in the 2006 season opener for both teams at Etown Saturday.

After a scoreless first quarter, St. Vincent rattled off five unanswered goals early in the second quarter to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Elizabethtown began its comeback with 4:20 left in the half as Tom Welch (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) scored the Blue Jaysí first goal of the season. With 11:33 left in the third quarter, Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) scored an extra-man goal to cut the gap to 5-2. At 7:30 left in the third quarter, Reid Allison (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) scored another man-up goal for Etown, and Puzzangara scored his second man-up goal with 3:30 left in the third quarter to cut the gap to 5-4.

Elizabethtown tied the game at 5-5 57 seconds into the fourth quarter as Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) scored the Blue Jaysí fourth man-up goal of the game. Bart Costello (Lexington, MA/Lexington) scored the game-winner for St. Vincent with 3:06 left.

St. Vincent was called for eight penalties totaling eight minutes over the course of the game, while Elizabethtown received one 30-second penalty. St. Vincent held a 34-26 edge in shots, and the visiting Bearcats held a 42-33 advantage in ground balls as well.

Puzzangara led Etown in scoring with two goals, and Frank Cacia (Newark, DE/Tatnall School) led the Blue Jays in ground balls with five. Etown goaltender Chris Schuch (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) made 14 saves and had four ground balls.

Costello led St. Vincent in goals with three, and he tied for the team lead with Evan Chateauneuf (Boxborogh, MA/Kent School), Justin Trafalski (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland), and Steve Goold (Dallas, TX/Dallas Jesuit) in ground balls with five each. Ian Poole (North Delta, BC/North Delta) and Tim Maser (McMurray, PA/Peters Twp.) each had two assists for St. Vincent, and Poole added a goal for the Bearcats.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road against Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday, March 8 in a 4:00 p.m. game to be held at Duke University.
