|ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Twelve different players scored goals as Elizabethtown College routed Gwynedd-Mercy College 20-5 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.|
Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) finished with four goals and an assist for the Blue Jays (6-2 overall), who won their third consecutive match by outshooting the Griffins (5-6 overall) by a 42-14 margin.
Sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) added two goals and two assists for Elizabethtown, while senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone), sophomore Shawn Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Hershey) and first-year student Ben Erdman (Herndon, PA/Susquehannock) each scored two goals apiece.
Nicholas Coan led Gwynedd-Mercy with a pair of goals, but the Griffins fell behind 5-0 after seven minutes of action and trailed 8-2 after one quarter, 12-3 at halftime and 19-4 after three quarters.
Elizabethtown needed just 13 seconds to get on the scoreboard as junior Josh Dougherty (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Academy) scored the game's first goal. Junior Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), Kenneally, junior Kyle Huckle (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and Weber scored in the next seven minutes to give the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead with 8:18 left in the first quarter.
After a goal by Nick Hummel got the Griffins on the scoreboard with 6:02 left in the quarter, Weber, Kenneally and junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) scored in a 41-second span to extend the Elizabethtown lead to 8-1 with 4:40 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, McCafferty scored twice sandwiched around an own goal when the Griffin defense accidentally knocked the ball into its own net. Corcoran added a goal for the Blue Jays, while Coan scored his second of the game with four seconds left in the half to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 12-3 at intermission.
Elizabethtown scored seven third-quarter goals, as sophomore Brian Schaaf (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) scored followed by a pair from Weber and one by Erdman to give the Blue Jays a 16-3 lead with 11:25 left in the quarter. After Thomas Stewart scored for the Griffins, Elizabethtown ended the quarter with goals by Corcoran, Erdman and junior Corey Toby (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) to head to the fourth quarter with a 19-4 lead.
First-year student Drew Stitt (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) scored Elizabethtown's only goal of the fourth quarter with 12:02 to go, while Gwynedd-Mercy's Stefan Hetland closed out the scoring with 4:55 remaining.
Elizabethtown held a 38-14 advantage in ground balls and won 22-of-26 faceoffs in the game. First-year student Derek Karsten (Ephrata, PA/Cocalico) had a game-high five ground balls for the Blue Jays, while sophomore Brent Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) had four ground balls and was a perfect 12-for-12 in faceoffs.
Elizabethtown used three goalkeepers in the contest and each made one save, as sophomore Hunter Malick (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) played 17 minutes, first-year student Brendan Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Western Reserve Academy) entered in the second quarter for 32 minutes and senior Austin Hayes (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) came on in the fourth quarter for 11 minutes. Kevin Hens started for Gwynedd-Mercy and made seven saves in 10 minutes, with James Leemon finishing with 13 saves over the final 50 minutes.
