|ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 19, 2003) -- Four players scored three goals each
for Nazareth Wednesday, including sophomore attackman Chris Balash
(pictured), who had three goals and three assists, as visiting Nazareth
defeated East Avenue rival St. John Fisher, 21-7, in the first-ever
meeting between the two schools in men's lacrosse.
Nazareth scored five times in the first quarter, including a goal by senior midfielder Erik Sullivan just 19 seconds into the game. Fisher stayed close as Brandon Harvey scored twice in the first quarter. The Golden Flyers (2-1 overall, 1-0 Empire 8), however, opened the second quarter with five straight goals and eventually extended their advantage to 13-4 by halftime.
Bryan Coon, T.J. Rogers, and Justin Wahl each had three goals and Jim Quackenbush contributed one goal and two assists and was a winner on 14 of 19 face-offs. Five Nazareth players netted their first career goals in Balash, Rogers, Sean Lander, Mike McGrath, and Kyle Purcell.
Nazareth used three goalies with sophomore Don Green making nine saves in the first half. Freshmen Alex Civalier and George Polino combined for three saves in the first half. In addition to Harvey's two goals, John Della Donne had one goal and one assist for St. John Fisher (0-1, 0-1).
The Golden Flyers, ranked ninth nationally in Division III, host Adelphi University, ranked seventh in Division II, Saturday at 12 p.m.
