April 24, 2007
The Game Story:
Nazareth College went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter and pulled away to defeat host St. John Fisher College 16-8 in the final game of the regular season on Tuesday.

Fisher (9-5) trailed 6-5 at intermission and 9-8 going into the fourth quarter, but the Golden Flyers, ranked seventh nationally, won the opening face-off of the fourth quarter and scored 11 seconds into the final period, starting the seven-goal run.

The Cardinals fell behind 3-1 early in the game, allowing three goals on four shots in the opening four minutes of action. Senior attacker Matt Hargather (Fairport/Fairport) brought the Cardinals to within one with his 41st goal of the season, but Nazareth answered with two goals midway through the second quarter to give the Golden Flyers a three-goal lead.

With just over three minutes remaining in the half, freshman Chris Schmidt (West Genesee/Camillus) went to goal alone to cut the Nazareth lead to two goals. A minute and 24 seconds later, with time running out, the Cardinals pulled to within one goal when Dave Malone (Penfield/Penfield) assisted Michael-Paul Solamon (West Genesee/Camillus) on his fifth goal of the season to cut the lead back down to one.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Golden Flyers built the lead back up to three goals, but Matt Kaiser (Waterloo/Waterloo) and Malone each recorded a goal to bring the score to 8-6 Nazareth. Following another Nazareth goal, sophomore midfielder Dennis Bell (Penfield/Rochester) scored with just 22 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the lead to one, but the Cardinals never got any closer, as the Golden Flyers scored seven unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to improve to 12-2 on the year.

Malone finished the game with a team-leading two points on one goal and an assist, while Hargather, Solamon, Schmidt, Kaiser, Scott Bowen (Binghamton/Binghamton), and Bell each added a goal. Dave Wood(Vestal/Vestal) won 11 faceoffs, and led Fisher with nine ground balls, while senior midfielder Zack Zazzara (Fayetteville-Manlius/Syracuse) who recorded his third goal of the season, scooped five ground balls. Goalkeeper Brian Cummings (West Genesee/Camillus) stopped eight shots, and picked up two ground balls.

The Cardinals (9-5, 3-4 Empire 8) will return to action this weekend to take on Ithaca College in the Empire 8 Conference Championship tournament.
