Saint John Fisher vs. Oswego State

The Game Story:
The St. John Fisher College men’s lacrosse team scored five goals in the third quarter and rallied to beat visiting SUNY Oswego 9-8 on Thursday at Fisher’s Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher improves to 2-0, while Oswego falls to 0-1.

Oswego led 3-1 after the first quarter and took a 4-3 lead into the intermission.

Fisher’s Chris Schmidt scored all three goals in the first half with his third tying the game with 6:50 left in the second quarter.

Fisher tied the game less than two minutes into the second half on a goal from Jeff Price and junior Scott Bowen put the Cardinals up 5-4 with 7:40 remaining in the third quarter on a pass from Ryan Schmidt.

Oswego tied the game less than a minute later, but the Cardinals scored the next three goals – one from Bowen with 5:27 remaining in the quarter, one from Ryan Schmidt with 2:30 left in the third and one from freshman Kyle Denhoff 42 seconds later – to put Fisher up by three at 8-5.

The Lakers pulled to within one goal on two occasions in the fourth quarter and scored the game’s final goal with 2:20 left, but the Fisher defense never allowed the equalizer. Junior Jon Cortina stopped 11 shots to earn the win, including four in the final quarter.

Chris Schmidt led the Cardinals with three goals, while Bowen and Ryan Schmidt each finished with two goals and one assist. Bowen also led the Cardinals with seven ground balls. Denhoff and Price each tallied one goal and one assist, while Dave Malone and Mike Cummins each recorded an assist.

Sophomore Erich Rassow won 9-of-16 faceoffs.

Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday and will face St. Vincent’s College. The game will be played at Johns Hopkins University.
