Cazenovia vs. Hilbert
April 6, 2011
The Game Story:
Morrisville, N.Y. - In a game being played at SUNY Morrisville, the Cazenovia College men's lacrosse team (3-5, 1-1 NEAC) surpassed their win total from a year ago with a hard fought 14-12 victory over Hilbert College (4-3). While the conditions were frigid on the field the action was hot.

The Hawks would storm out of the gate to score the games first goal within 15 seconds of the opening face off. But the Wildcats would roar back, outscoring Hilbert 5-1 throughout the rest of the stanza powered by two goals a piece by Jamil Modaffari (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and TJ Shaw (Tully, N.Y.).

Hilbert would begin to gain momentum in the second quarter, but Cazenovia would slam the door on the rally as Jevon Pakkala (Newfield, N.Y.) and Gareth Fabian (Randolph, VT) would score consecutive goals to give the Wildcats a 9-6 lead at the half.

The Hawks came out motivated in the second half, going on a 5-1 run to take an 11-10 lead with 14:53 remaining in the game. After each team traded a goal, it was Modaffari that came through in the clutch for the Wildcats, ripping the net for three straight goals (five total in the game) to secure the victory for Cazenovia.

Equally impressive, was the Cazenovia defense. Goalkeeper Alex Iannicello (Warners, N.Y.) proved to be impenetrable, earning the victory by racking up seven saves and holding Hilbert scoreless over the last 12:29 of play in the game.

Coach Kevin Johnson also received inspired play all night from defenders such as Adam Hill (Henrietta, N.Y.) who played lock down defense in addition to scooping up four ground balls, and senior co-captain Wes Posson (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who clinched the game for the Wildcats by forcing a Hawks turnover with just 1:18 left in the game.

Shaw and Pakkala would each finish the day with a hat trick (three goals), and Fabian dished out a team high three assists.
