Alvernia vs. Mount St Joseph

The Game Story:
Reading, Pa. (March 15, 2007) Ė Mt. St. Joseph attack Neal Barnes scored on a one-on-one with 11 seconds left in overtime to give the Lions a 13-12 win over Alvernia Thursday afternoon in non-conference menís lacrosse action at Shirk Stadium Field on the Albright College campus.

Michael Basch scored a pair of first quarter goals on the man-advantage and the Mount built a 5-2 lead on Kristopher Kalinís second straight goal with 7:31 left in the second quarter. Alvernia freshman Chris Baker (Exeter, PA/Exeter) set up Tom Fraker (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) twice to end the first half and on the first goal of the second half as the first three of seven straight goals for the hosts.

Alvernia posted a 9-5 lead on the first of two goals on the day from Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, PA/Notre Dame), but MSJ stormed back with three straight even strength goals from three different players. Alvernia junior Tom Novak (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) pushed the Alvernia lead back to two, 10-8 with an unassisted goal at the 11:37 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Mount scored twice in a span of 21 seconds to tie the score at 10-10 with 10:10 to play in regulation. Novak broke the tie just over a minute later, but Barnes and Basch tallied to give MSJ a 12-11 lead, its first since it was up 5-4 in the second quarter. Marcinek scored again from the top to knot the score at 12-all with 3:47 to play. Neither team scored over the final 3-plus minutes of regulation and Alvernia goalie Mark Lenahan (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) made one save in overtime, but found himself facing the one-on-one as the clock ticked down when Taylor Samuel threw a pass out front to Barnes who as all alone.

Lenahan finished the game with 15 saves for Alvernia. Blake Herner finished with 14 for MSJ. Fraker led Alvernia with five goals. Alvernia will travel to Manhattanville College Wednesday for a non-conference match-up.
