|Allentown, PA – William Roerden scored the game-winning goal with just 17 seconds left in regulation to lift Marywood University to a dramatic, 6-5victory over Muhlenberg College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers improve their record to 3-0 with the win while the Mules see their record fall to 1-2 on the season.|
Marywood’s Jamie Beagen (Patchogue, NY) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 7:49 mark of the first quarter. George Downey IV (Palmyra, PA) won the ensuing face-off, picked up the groundball and set up Nick Parks (Emmaus, PA) for a goal just 13 seconds later as the Pacers doubled their lead.
Muhlenberg would get on the board with 59 seconds to play in the second quarter when Brent Siebold scored unassisted, but Downey would singlehandedly give Marywood a 4-1 halftime lead. After scoring unassisted with eight seconds to play in the period, Downey won the subsequent draw and raced downfield to beat Mules’ goalie Mike Horowitz as time expired.
The Pacers held the three-goal halftime advantage despite getting outshot 21-12 in the opening 30 minutes of play as Jesse Habich (Broomall, PA) turned aside 12 Muhlenberg shots.
The Mules would take advantage of their first man-up opportunity of the game when Siebold scored his second unassisted goal of the afternoon at the 11:36 mark of the third quarter. Clint Watkins would cut Marywood’s lead to 4-3 by scoring with 8:59 to play in the third period, but Stephen Klepfer (Binghamton, NY) scored off a feed from Parks at the 6:48 mark to restore Marywood’s two-goal advantage. Watkins’ second goal at the 1:16 mark made the score 5-4 in favor of the Pacers heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Dustin Sturdevant (Binghamton, NY) nearly added to Marywood’s lead, but his shot midway through the fourth quarter banged off the crossbar. Muhlenberg would tied the contest with 1:05 to play Alex Ardolino scored off an assist from Siebold, but William Roerden (Warwick, NY) would tally the game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Marywood to the win.
Downey tied for a game-high with three points on two goals and an assist while going 9-12 on face-offs. Parks added two points on a goal and an assist for the Pacers, who were outshot 38-21 for the game. Habich was outstanding again in Marywood’s cage, making 19 saves for the game.
Siebold paced Muhlenberg’s attack with two goals and one assist. Horowitz made four saves in the first half before being replaced by Oliver Baron, who turned aside two Marywood shot in the second half.
The Pacers won 10 of the game’s 14 face-offs while the Mules held a 38-31 edge in the groundball battle.
Marywood returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Morrisville, NY to take on Morrisville State College in a non-conference match-up scheduled to face-off at 3:30 p.m.
