|The Game Story:|
Ryan O'Douherty netted a pair of goals on Wednesday night.
Yonkers, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Lacrosse team outscored Misercordia 3-1 in the second half but was unable to overcome a five goal first quarter from the Cougars in a hard fought 8-6 defeat on Wednesday night. Sophomore Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.) and senior Ryan O’Dougherty (Middletown, N.J.) each tallied a pair of goals for the Mount.
The Cougars wasted little time getting on the board in the contest, scoring three times in the first 7:30 of the period. Shea found the back of the cage with just under 6:00 left in the opening stanza, before Misericordia reeled off two more tallies in the final 3:00 to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
Freshman Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second period as the two teams traded goals heading into halftime. A Dean Tilton tally with 68 seconds left in the half sent the Cougars into the intermission with a 7-3 advantage.
The Mount Saint Vincent defense buckled down in the second half, allowing just one goal over the final 30:00. O’Dougherty scored the only goal of the third period with the man advantage to bring the Dolphins to within three goals with a full quarter left to play.
O’Doughtery struck again at the 13:27 mark of the fourth and Brian Zambri (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied with just 11:21 left in regulation to bring the Dolphins to within a single goal. Misericordia would not allow the equalizer however and a Tim Bojanowski goal with 33 ticks left in the contest sealed the victory for the Cougars.
Zachary Buckley scored a pair of goals for the Cougars on the night, as seven different players posted goals. Sean McGuigan and Patrick McTague each registered assists in the contest. Buckley led the squad with eight groundballs.
Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, N.Y.) got his fourth straight start in the cage for the Dolphins and finished the night with 16 saves and a team-high five groundballs. His counterpart, James Scott, stopped eight shots and scooped four groundballs.
Misericordia outshot the Mount 41-22 in the contest and picked up 46 groundballs to 35 for the Dolphins. Mount Saint Vincent scored the only goal of the game with the man advantage, going 1-5 in extra man opportunities.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent back to the .500 mark at 2-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Saturday when they host Cazenovia.
