WestConn Advances To Little East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals
With 14-6 Win Over UMass Boston

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 29) – Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) scored a game-high five goals and the Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team defeated University of Massachusetts Boston, 14-6 in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening at the WestConn Athletic Complex. The Colonials will face second-seeded Keene State College in the LEC semifinals this Thursday, May 1. Face off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Keene, N.H.

Lanhart scored his first two goals in game’s first 39 seconds as the Colonials raced out to the early lead. He is among the leaders in Division III with 46 goals this season.

The Beacons, 4-11, battled back and took a 3-2 lead at the 6:14 mark of the first quarter. Junior attack John Canty (Milton, MA) rattled off three straight goals for the visitors.

WestConn, 11-6, went on a run of its own, scoring the next five goals and took a 7-3 advantage into intermission. During that run, freshman Tom Begley (East Islip, NY) tallied two of his three goals on the afternoon. Begley had a total of five points on the night, adding a team-high two assists in the victory.

UMass Boston drew within three goals following a goal from Bobby Cusack (Braintree, MA) with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter. Neither team registered a goal for over 22 minutes before Cusack netted his 10th goal of the season.

The Colonials, winners of four of their last five games, scored seven of the game’s final nine goals in the final quarter. Lanhart registered a hat trick in the final stanza and John McGrath (Wantagh, NY) connected for his sixth and seventh goals of the season in the final 3:50 or play.

UMass Boston was led by Canty’s four total points and Jared Kinch’s (Cohasset, MA) goal and two helpers.
Junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) earned the victory in goal for WestConn after making six saves. He gave way to Chris Frappier (Watertown, CT) for the final 1:53. Frappier did not have to make a stop for the Colonials.

Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) made 22 saves for the Beacons.

The Little East Conference championship game is slated for Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. at the higher remaining seed’s pitch after Thursday’s semifinals. Fifth seed Plymouth State University upset fourth seed UMass Dartmouth, 8-7 on Tuesday and will face LEC regular-season champs and number one seed Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, CT on Thursday.
