Western Connecticut vs. Umass-dartmouth

The Game Story:
DANBURY, CT (Apr. 25) — After dominating the first 10 minutes of play, the Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team needed a dramatic last-minute goal from junior A.J. Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY) to claim a 13-12 victory over Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Freshman Sean Macey (New Fairfield, CT) led the WestConn attack with five goals, followed by A.J. Barbieri, senior Mike Nazarro (Trumbull, CT), and Tom Begley (East Islip, NY) with two goals each. Seniors Joseph Aitken (Lakeville, CT) and George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY) added one goal each for the victorious Colonials. Junior Kirk Zachary (East Islip, NY) led WestConn by assisting on three goals, including the game-winner.

Leading the attack for UMass Dartmouth were Bobby Young (Billerica, MA) with four goals and Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA) with three. Foster also led the Corsairs with three assists.

WestConn got on the board early with two goals by Sean Macey in less than two minutes to start the first quarter. Andrew Foster scored all of his goals in the first quarter to single-handedly keep the Corsairs in the game, but when Tom Begley scored for WestConn with two seconds remaining in the quarter the Colonials held a 6-3 lead. In the second quarter it was UMass Dartmouth’s turn to dominate the action, outscoring WestConn 5-1. In less than three minutes the Corsairs had tied the score 6-6 and held an 8-7 advantage going into intermission.

In the third period, WestConn’s freshman goaltender Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT) made several acrobatic saves to limit UMass Dartmouth to two goals, while Sean Macey and George Tsirigotis scored for the Colonials to keep WestConn with one going into the fourth. Senior Mike Nazarro celebrated Senior Day by scoring the first two goals of the fourth quarter to give WestConn an 11-10 lead. Bobby Young answered for the Corsairs at the 9:01 mark to tie the score at 11-11, and again after a Sean Macey goal for WestConn to tie the score at 12-12 with four minutes to play. Both teams had strong chances to score in the closing minutes, but with 30 seconds remaining Kirk Zachary fed a perfect pass to A.J. Barbieri for the game-winner. Senior Terry Stroz (Monroe, CT), who dominated the face-off circle in the fourth quarter, won the ensuing faceoff for WestConn, but a turnover gave UMass Dartmouth one last chance to send the game to overtime. Andrew Foster brought the ball quickly down the right side for the Corsairs, but his shot sailed wide of the goal, giving the Colonials a 13-12 victory in their final game of the season.

Freshman Tyler Martone was spectacular in goal for the Colonials with 19 saves and earns his third victory of the season. Kevin Pelsinski (Merrimack, NH) recorded six saves in goal for UMass Dartmouth and suffers the loss.

WestConn concludes the 2009 season with an overall record of 4-11, 2-5 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Dartmouth ends the regular season with a 6-8 record, 3-4 in the LEC.
