WestConn Dominates Second Half in 12-5 Win Over UMass Dartmouth

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 26) – After being out-played and trailing 3-1 at the end of the first period, Western Connecticut State University stormed back outscoring UMass Dartmouth 11-2 in the second, third, and fourth periods to take a 12-5 victory in a matchup of Little East Conference rivals on Saturday afternoon at the WestConn Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) led WestConn with 6 goals and finishes the regular season leading the Colonials with a total of 41 goals scored. Also scoring for WestConn were senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT) with two goals, freshman Tom Begley (East Islip, NY) with two goals, and sophomore Kirk Zachary (East Islip, NY) and senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) who each scored once for the victorious Colonials. Junior George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY) led the Colonials in assists with four, while Dennis Skarda handed out three assists to bring his team-leading total to 33 for the season.

Leading the attack for UMass Dartmouth were Nick Campbell (Rutland, VT), Brian Flanagan (Walpole, MA) Matt Leary (Framingham, MA), Matt Swirebalus (Weymouth, MA), and Timothy Walsh (Medford, MA) who each scored once in a losing effort for the Corsairs. Walsh also handed out two assists.

UMass Dartmouth controlled the action early in the game and took an early lead on a goal from Campbell with an assist from Walsh. The Corsairs kept the pressure on the WestConn defense and took a 3-1 lead after the first period of play. The rest of the game was all WestConn. Adam Lanehart took a pass from Dennis Skarda in the first minute of the second period and quickly found the back of the net. Lanehart scored again two minutes later and Skarda gave the Colonials a 4-3 lead at the 8:26 mark of the second period.

The Colonials quickly increased the lead to start the second half when Kirk Zachary scored with an assist to George Tsirigotis. WestConn outscored the Corsairs 3-1 in the third to take a 7-4 lead going into the fourth period. Adam Lanehart scored three times in the fourth as WestConn scored five consecutive goals to secure the victory on Senior Day and close out the regular season. A late goal by UMass Dartmouth’s Matt Leary made the final margin 12-5 in favor of WestConn.

Junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) earns his ninth win of the season for WestConn, while Steve Chase (Boston, MA) takes the loss in goal for the Corsairs.

With this afternoon’s victory, WestConn closes out the regular season with a record of 10-6 and a 4-2 record in Little East Conference games. UMass Dartmouth falls to 10-4 (3-3 in the LEC).

WestConn will play an opening-round game in this year’s Little East Conference tournament on Tuesday, April 29th. Game time, opponent, and location to be announced.
