| WESTCONN ADVANCES TO LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS WITH 11-7 WIN OVER UMASS DARTMOUTH|
DANBURY, CT - (May 1, 2007) - For the second time in four days, the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team defeated University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. On Tuesday, it prevailed 11-7 in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference Tournament and advance to play intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University at Nevers Field in Willimantic, CT in the semifinals this Thursday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.
Senior attack John Stashenko (Norwalk, CT) led the Colonials with four goals and one assist at Westside Athletic Complex before a crowd of 150.
WestConn, 10-6, raced out to a 3-0 lead following goals by Joe Capostosto (East Islip, NY), Stashenko and LEC Rookie of the Year candidate Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) in the first six minutes of play. Its lead grew to 5-1 after Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) connected for his 27th goal of the season with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Corsairs, which close out their season at 6-9, drew within one goal, 5-4 on back-to-back goals by Jeff Pelton (Lowell, MA) midway through the second stanza.
A. J. Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY) scored his 23rd marker of the season with 3:54 to give WestConn a 6-4 lead at intermission.
Stashenko scored a trio of goals in the third quarter as the Colonials outscored the Corsairs 4-1 and led 10-5 after three.
UMass Dartmouth drew within three goals following Ryan Trexler's (Agawam, MA) fourth goal of the season with 12:05 remaining in the game.
Senior defenseman Darryl Bell (Norwalk, CT) was credited with his first goal of the season after his shot was deflected into the Corsairs goal with 29 ticks left.
Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) earned the victory in goal for WestConn after making seven saves. Steve Chase (Boston, MA) turned away 15 shots in the first 56 minutes before yielding to Shawn King (Bellingham, MA) who made two saves in the final four minutes.
Pac finished with two goals and an assist for the Colonials while Mark Lapointe (Tyngsboro, MA) had a pair of goals for the Corsairs.
The Colonials, which defeated the Corsairs, 12-9 in the regular-season finale on Saturday, dropped a 15-14 decision to Eastern Connecticut back on April 4 at the WAC.
