Western Connecticut vs. Plymouth State

The Game Story:
DANBURY, CT (Mar. 28) – Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT) made 26 saves in goal for the Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team, but the Colonials still fell to Little East Conference rival Plymouth State 13-10 Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex in the conference opener for both teams.

Freshman Sean Macey (New Fairfield, CT) led the Colonial offensive attack with three goals and one assist, followed by senior George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY) with two goals and one assist. Junior Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT), junior A.J. Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY), senior Mike Nazzaro (Trumball, CT), freshman Mike Schoen (Tolland, CT), and senior Joseph Aitken (Lakeville, CT) each added one goal.

For Plymouth State, Tim Hadley (New London, NH) had four goal and Andrew Eriksen (Beverly, MA) had three goals to lead the Panther attack. Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, NH) and Logan Irish (Somer, CT) each had two goals, while Matt Johansmeyer (Shelburne Falls, MA) and Steve Engel (South Windsor, CT) each added on goal.

Plymouth State got on the scoreboard first when Andrew Eriksen scored less than two minutes into the game to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. WestConn tied the score on a goal by A.J. Barbieri at the 8:52 mark, but the Colonials then scored a flurry of three goals in the final three minutes of the period to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter of play. Goals by Brian Giroux and Eriksen early in the second period narrowed the lead to 4-3, but Sean Macey answered for the Colonials to make the margin 5-3. Two Plymouth State goals late in the period made the score 5-5 going into intermission. At the half, Plymouth State held a 35-13 advantage in shots, but Tyler Martone’s 17 saves (compared to three saves for Plymouth State) kept the Colonials in the game.

Plymouth State struck first again in the third period with two quick scores and a 7-5 lead. An unassisted goal by Tim Hadley at the 9:36 mark pushed the Panther lead to 8-5 and the period ended with Plymouth State holding a 9-6 lead. Twice in the final period the Colonials mounted a come-back, closing to within 9-8 and 11-10, but three WestConn penalties in the final 90 seconds of the game cost the Colonials any chance of overtaking Plymouth State and the Panthers held on for a 13-10 victory.

For the game, Plymouth State outshot WestConn 65-26 and Tyler Martone finished with 26 saves, but suffers his third defeat of the season. Kevin Hayes (Beverly, MA) earns his first win of the season in goal for the Panthers, recording five saves.

The Colonials’ next game will on Monday, March 30th, when they travel to Nichols. Face-off is slated for 7:00pm.
