The Game Story:
Wood’s Saves Lead WestConn Over Plymouth State in LEC Opener, 9-7

DANBURY, CT (Mar. 29) – After a third period in which 10 goals were scored, junior goal keeper Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) made several brilliant saves in the game’s closing minutes as Western Connecticut State University won their Little East Conference opener over Plymouth State, 9-7, at the WestConn Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) led the WestConn scoring attack with three goals, followed by junior George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY) who added two. Also scoring for the Colonials were sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY), freshman Tom Begley (East Islip, NY), junior Vincent Bevilacqua (Branford, CT), and senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) who each scored once. Senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT) led the Colonials in assists with three.

Leading the attack for Plymouth State were Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, NH) and Adam Krinsky (Concord, NH) with two goals each. John Cogswell (Jefferson, MA), Steve Engel (South Windsor, CT), and Tim Hadley (New London, NH) each scored on goal in a losing effort for the Panthers.

Plymouth State scored in the game’s second minute to take an early lead, but then were held scoreless for the remainder of the first half. WestConn took 10 shots in the first period and 14 in the second, but three goals in the second period (all by Lanehart) were the only time the Colonials found the net in the first half of play. WestConn appeared to take control of the game early in the third when they took a 5-1 lead after an unassisted goal by Ron Pac, but Plymouth State stormed back to trail by one, 7-6, with one minute to play in the period. Andrew Barbieri found the net for the Colonials with 3 seconds remaining in the third to give WestConn an 8-6 advantage. When Plymouth State scored in the first minute of the fourth, it appeared the scoring frenzy would continue, but both goal tenders turned away numerous scoring chances and the score stood at 8-7 in favor of WestConn until Tom Begley scored an unassisted goal at the 2:33 mark. The final two minutes were dominated by a flurry of Plymouth State shots and acrobatic saves by Wood, with WestConn taking the victory, 9-7.

Kyle Wood earns his fifth win of the season after making 13 saves for WestConn, while Billy Morgan, also with 13 saves, takes the loss for Plymouth State.

WestConn’s record now stands at 5-3 on the season (1-0 in the LEC), while Plymouth State falls to 3-2 (0-1 LEC).

WestConn travels to play in-state and Little East rival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, April 2nd. Game time is slated for 4:00pm.
