The Game Story:
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Captains fought back from being down 3-6 in the second period to build an 8-6 lead in the third. With the game tied as time was winding down, an unassisted goal with 17 seconds remaining sealed the victory for Greensboro, 12-11.

The first period ended with Greensboro in the lead 3-1 with Kyle Pasta scoring CNU’s goal off a pass from Kevin Righi. Goals went back and forth in the second period until the Captains turned it on with four goals in the last six minutes of play, three coming from senior Ray Fitzgerald.

CNU went into halftime up 7-6 and scored first in the third period to give them their biggest lead of the game at two goals. Greensboro scored four more goals in the period to CNU’s two to make it an even 10-10 going into the fourth period.

Greensboro struck first in the fourth at 12:23 to give them the lead 11-10. Four minutes later Benen O’Brien scored to tie it up. Both teams battled but Greensboro came out on top with a goal with 17 seconds left from Brad Gesser, his third of the game, to edge the Captains, 12-11.

The Captains led in shots with 32 while Greensboro had 29 and in groundballs with 33 over Greensboro’s 19. CNU also led in faceoffs, winning 18 of 24.

The loss drops CNU to 5-5 on the season and improves Greensboro to 8-3.

The Captains travel to Manassas, VA next Saturday to play Swarthmore College at 1:00pm.
