|NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s men’s lacrosse squad kicked off the 2009 season on a positive note by coming from three goals down to defeat Marymount, 8-7, in overtime Saturday afternoon.|
The Captains got on the board first just over a minute into the game on Ryan Merrell’s first of four goals. Marymount tied the game just a minute later and freshman Will Perkins put CNU back on top, 2-1, with 11:53 left in the first period.
Trailing 3-2, the Saints reeled off four straight to take a 6-3 lead with 8:11 left in the third. CNU cut the lead to two but Marymount responded with a goal of its own to extend its lead back to three with 6:24 to go in the third.
Christopher Newport scored one more time in the third before scoring twice in the fourth, with Merrell’s fourth goal coming with 5:57 to tie it up.
Freshman Mike Laycock scored the game winner with 2:23 remaining in overtime to lift the Captains to the win.
Laycock scored three times and Will Perkins scored once and had three assists.
The Saints out-shot the Captains, 45-31. Jackson Tyler picked up his first win in the cage by making 16 saves.
Marymount falls to 0-1 while CNU is now 1-0. The Captains return to action next Saturday when they host Mary Washington at 1 pm.
