|NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse team won its first ever game in its first season as the Captains held off a late rally by Marymount to defeat the Saints, 9-8.|
Ray Fitzgerald scored the program's first goal just 44 seconds into the game. Logan Keyser gave the Captains a 2-0 lead just a minute and a half later.
The Saints got on the board with 12:33 left in the first but CNU countered with three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Each team scored once in the second period and the Captains took a 6-2 lead at the half.
In the third, CNU extended its lead with two goals in the first five minutes to take an 8-2 lead. Marymount scored with just under eight minutes left to cut the lead to 8-3.
Counting the Saints goal in the third, Marymount scored five unanswered goals to cut the lead to 8-7 with 6:57 left in the game. Ryan Merrell's goal with 4:42 provided a much-needed insurance goal to put the Captains up by two. The Saints made a late rush and scored with 1:11 left which proved to be the final margin.
Merrell led the Captains with three goals. Keyser scored twice while Chris Quigley, Eric Huggins, Andy Mullinax and Michael Turk each had one goal. Mike Burns finished with one assist.
Brandon Nemes led the Saints with three scores while Alex Curley and D.J. Tayman each finished with two goals. P.J. Keshavarz scored once and assisted on four others.
Marymount out-shot the Captains 37-21. CNU's Ray Ralph finished with 12 saves in goal. Marymount's Alex Hammer had six saves. The Captains also finished with 51 total ground balls compared to the Saints 44.
Marymount falls to 0-2 while CNU is now 1-0. The Captains return to action this Saturday as they travel to Hood with start time set for 1 pm.
