| ANGOLA, Ind. (March 2, 2010) Weather delayed the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team's 2010 season opener a few days, but the wait proved worth it Tuesday afternoon. Playing their contest at Trine University that was originally scheduled for last Saturday, the Lords quieted the Thunder, 11-3, to kick off their schedule on a high note. It didn't take long for Kenyon to get rolling thanks to an offensive eruption late in the first period. The Lords broke a 1-1 deadlock with a goal at the 3:23 mark, then ripped off three more goals in the next four minutes of play to take the lead for good. Freshman Mackie Avis (Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) had a big game in his Kenyon debut. Avis was one of three Lords with a pair of goals and added two assists and two ground balls. Senior Andrew Damskey (Geyserville, CA/Sonoma Academy) stuffed his stat line with two goals, five ground balls, and an impressive 10-of-15 effort on face-offs. Sophomore Geoff Akie (Sherborn, MA/Dover-Sherborn) also scored twice for Kenyon. With the Lords offense controlling the game, the defense could have taken it easy. Instead, Kenyon's D made sure each of Trine's trips into Lord territory was a frustrating one. The Thunder only managed 20 shots in the game - compared to the Lords' 42 attempts - and senior goalie Adam Szczepanski (Bothell, WA/Berkshire School (MA)) made five saves to pick up the win in the cage. Kenyon is next scheduled to play its home opener at McBride Field Friday at 4 p.m. against Hendrix College. |
