| BANGOR, Maine -- The University of New England men's lacrosse team built a 12-1 cushion after three quarters on its way to a 14-6 non-conference win over Husson University in the mutual season-opener Sunday afternoon at John P. Boucher Field. Sophomores Nick Gross (Kennebunk, Maine) and Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), along with first-year Geoff Bruno (Durham, N.H.), each tallied three goals to pace the Nor'easters (1-0). Bruno also had a pair of assists to lead Big Blue with five points, and O'Gorman won 10 of 13 face-offs in the game. Junior Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists for UNE. A trio of seniors -- Matt Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.), George Jenkins (Natick, Mass.), and Dylan Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) -- all recorded one and one, and first-year Eddie Burke (Windsor, Conn.) notched the remaining marker. Senior goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) kept the Eagles off the board in the first half (8-0), turning away all five shots that came on target in the opening 30 minutes. Junior Jay Letendre (Southington, Conn.) and first-year Chris Baker (Ellicott City, Md.) made five and two saves, respectively, after haltime, while allowing three goals apiece. The Nor'easters out-shot their opponents, 42-31, on the day, and converted 4-of-9 man-up opportunities. For Husson (0-1), Ben Landry scored three times, and John Hooper III made 15 saves between the pipes. |
