| McNamara's career-best seven goals pushes Wheaton to first victory BANGOR, ME- Wheaton College men's lacrosse junior Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) amassed a career-best seven goals to push the Lyons to their first victory of the season with a 20-8 triumph at Husson University on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field. Wheaton moves to 1-2, while the Eagles remain winless at 0-5. McNamara also handed out two assists to finish with nine points, while three other Lyons recorded a hat trick. Senior Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) and junior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, MA/Proctor Academy) tallied three goals and one assist each, while senior Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had three tallies. Freshman goalie Jesse O'Neil (Charlestown, MA/Boston Latin School) earned his first win with 12 saves. For Husson, senior Matt Sweeney (Norwood, MA/Norwood) contributed a pair of goals and three assists, while sophomore Mitch Heaps (Felton, PA/Red Lion) scored three times. Junior goalie John Hooper (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) recorded eight stops in 45 minutes. Wheaton ripped off four straight goals during a 3:48 span to lead 4-0, but the hosts responded with four consecutive tallies over 5:25 to knot the score. However, the Lyons used a 6-0 run for a comfortable 10-4 edge with just over a minute to play in the second quarter. Each team found the back of the net in the final five seconds, with Wheaton leading 11-5 at the half. McNamara tallied with one tick left in the second period and twice more during the first 6:30 of the third. Cederberg added a goal midway through the quarter for a 14-5 cushion at 7:42. Husson made a push with three consecutive goals to get within 14-8 at 5:52 but didn't score again, as the Lyons scored the final goal of the third quarter and all five tallies of the fourth. |
