|The Game Story:|
|BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC men’s lacrosse team could not hold on tonight, giving up three goals in the final quarter, dropping their fourth straight, 8-7.|
The Panthers (0-4) struck first when Jacob McPherson found the back of the net three minutes in to go up 1-0. Greensboro (4-2) got the evener with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter, but Ryan Croft answered with the Panthers’ second goal at 2:06 to give the Panthers the lead again, 2-1 going into the first break.
The Pride scored the only goal of the second quarter at the 6:45 mark to retie the score at two goals apiece. After swapping goals to open the third, Chris Clarke getting the Panthers’ third just over two minutes into the period, the Panthers took control. They scored three goals to go up 6-3 with just 32 seconds in the third.
Cameron Hyde got the first of the three with 6:24 remaining in the period off an assist from Matt Ivie. D.J. Ward scored with 1:48 to put the Panthers up 5-3 and Ivie got a goal of his own to cap the run at the 32 second mark.
Greensboro was not finished, however, and scored two lightning fast goals in the waning seconds of the period to pull the margin back to a single goal. Just like that, the momentum was gone.
The Pride scored the tying goal 3:13 into the final frame, and when Payson Clark scored again for the Panthers with 7:54 remaining, they came right down the field and tied it up again 41 seconds later, 7-7. Jordan Drumheller got the winning goal for Greensboro with 5:53 remaining and the Pride played keep-away for much of the remaining time to bury BSC’s chances of a come-back despite a feverish effort by the Panthers.
The Panthers were outshot 31-27 on the night. They won just three of eighteen faceoff opportunities, and committed 34 turnovers to Greensboro’s 30. ‘Southern did collect six more grounders, 23-17 but could not claim their first win of the season.
‘Southern will continue its search for their first win in a neutral-site contest with the Catholic University of America this Friday in Atlanta. The game will be held at Lassiter High School at 3:00 p.m. Central time.
