|LYNCHBURG, VA (February 24, 2009)—Coming off of a tough season opening loss, Hampden-Sydney responded very nicely as they defeated first-year program Randolph College 17-0. The Tigers saw 11 different players score, including a game high four goals from junior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle).|
Hampden-Sydney wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as senior attackman Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) scored three straight goals in the first ten minutes. Freshman Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) then continued to show his ability to score, firing off two goals of his own. Two other freshmen, Daniel Deck (Richmond, VA/Monocan) and Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) also joined in the scoring tallying their first collegiate goals.
The win was a solid team effort with 31 Tigers getting in the action. Hampden-Sydney was led in ground balls by junior Mario Washington (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) with seven. Teddy Schwab (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) and Coats scooped up six a piece.
The Wildcats in their first ever collegiate game did play hard for 60 minutes and fought until the end, challenging the Tigers on both ends of the field.
Hampden-Sydney ripped a total of 55 shots on the night and scooped up 59 ground balls to Randolph's 21.
With the win the Tigers improve to 1-1 on the season.
Hampden-Sydney will continue its two game road stretch as the Tigers travel to Gettysburg, PA to take on the No. 2 Gettysburg Bullets on Saturday, February 28. The game is set to start at 1:00pm.
