|The Game Story:|
|LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a tough setback in the season opener last weekend, the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team came out firing on Saturday as the Captains ran past Randolph, 12-1, during a masterful performance at WildCat Stadium.|
Aaron Chrzaszcz scored twice and added an assist for CNU (1-1), while Will Geise and Gregory Limon both chipped in with two goals apiece as well. A week after scoring three goals against Washington & Lee, John Thompson added another strong effort, dishing out four assists to lead Christopher Newport.
On the defensive end, Andy McGregor and Mark Hargrove combined to allow just one goal and came within a scant two minutes of posting a shutout. Dave Magdeburger also helped on defense, posting three caused turnovers, while Zakary Burkhard forced a pair and picked up two ground balls for CNU.
For the second straight week, the Captains played lights-out in the first half. In the opening period, Limon got things rolling immediately after scoring just 34 seconds into regulation. Although Cam Davis clamped down for the WildCats and made several strong saves in goal, the relentless CNU attack would not be denied.
Nearing the seven-minute mark, Thompson dished to Chrzaszcz, who converted for his first goal of the game. Just 23 seconds later, following a Randolph turnover, Adam Abbate struck for Christopher Newport after launching a one-timer into the back of the net. Later, Devin Bushweller continued the onslaught with his first goal of the year before Thompson and Chrzaszcz teamed up for the second time at 2:43 to give CNU a 5-0 lead.
Keeping the pressure on, Teddy Pekalski fed Billy Crist, who got a clean look and made the WildCats pay with his first goal of the game to lead the Captains to a 6-0 edge heading into the second period.
With a less frenetic pace in the second stanza, Joey Rolando came through with a man-up score after an assist by Chrzaszcz to lift CNU to a seven-goal lead. Later, the defense continued to clamp down as Burkhard, Pekalski, Magdeburger, and Matt Stettler all forced turnovers to keep the shutout intact heading into halftime.
Following the break, the visitors kept the intensity up. Although Cam Davis was able to survive the first six shots by CNU in the period, the Captains never wavered. Eventually, Magdeburger found some free space at 3:27 and buried a bullet into the back of the net for an 8-0 lead. Three minutes later, Thompson set up Geise, who scored with 14 seconds remaining in the period to give the Captains a nine-goal lead heading into the final frame.
With more than enough breathing room, Christopher Newport quickly put the game out of reach. Chase Walton, Limon, and Geise scored three rapid-fire goals in the first four minutes of action on the way to a 12-0 lead. Looking for the shutout, Hargrove notched a pair of saves late in the period before Andrew Risse finally broke through for the WildCats with 1:20 remaining on a man-up advantage to put a blemish on CNU's otherwise perfect game.
Overall, the Captains held a 35-18 advantage in shots and were nearly spotless on clears, converting 22 of their 24 opportunities. Randolph led the way in face-offs, winning 10 of the 16 battles.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains complete their early-season road trip with a 7 p.m. showdown at Randolph-Macon.
