| The Game Story: | |||||
| ABINGTON, PA – The Hilbert College men’s lacrosse team opened up their inaugural 2011 season with a 19-6 road victory at Penn State Abington March 5. Frontier high school’s Josh Baker’s six goals led the Hawks to their first win of the season and dropped Abington to 0-4 overall. John Jewitt (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) opened up the scoring only forty-five seconds into the game off an assist by Sean Purtill (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). Hilbert held a 4-0 lead before Abington’s Chris Bracht fired a shot past the Hawks goalie, Pat Lunderman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield). The 5-2 Hilbert advantage exploded to a 12 – 3 led by half time. Five different Hawks found the back of the net during that time frame with Greg Zitnik (Blasdell, NY/Frontier), and Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park. NY/Canisius) each scoring two goals apiece. Twice during the period, Abington had major breakdowns allowing Hilbert to score back to back goals each within twenty-five seconds or less. The Hawks cooled off finishing the game with a 7-3 goal advantage in the second half. Baker tallied three more goals (all in third quarter) with Wagner netting two, one in each quarter. Seven different Hawks put points on the board for Hilbert. Wagner was 11 for 14 on face offs, and led both teams with 10 ground balls. Hilbert held a 50 to 22 advantage with shots and Lunderman made six saves. The Hawks stay in Eastern PA to play at Alvernia March 6 at 12 noon. |
