| GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy grinded out a 7-5 win over visiting Hood Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) paced the offense with three goals including a man-down goal late in the first half. Sophomore Nick Coan (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) added two scores and two assists and freshman goalie Richard Zagari (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) posted 15 saves as the Griffins are off to a 2-0 start. Risner put Gwynedd on the board midway in the first quarter before the Blazers’ Corey Roberts netted two in a row to end the stanza. GM answered early in the second with back-to-back scores from Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Emmett Devlin (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) to take a 3-2 lead. Tied at 3-3, Risner’s man-down tally came with 1:45 left in the second, starting a string of three-straight over a quarter and a half. Hood pulled within 6-5 with 3:12 left before Coan hooked up with sophomore Craig Trueblood (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) for an important insurance goal. Shots were in favor of the Blazers, 38-37, but the Griffins held a 32-31 groundball edge. Gwynedd will return to action on Saturday as the face off against Catholic here starting at 1 p.m. |
