| SCRANTON, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy will play for the CSAC Championship as a stellar defensive effort allowed the third-seeded Griffins to defeat second-seeded Marywood, 11-4, in a semifinal matchup Tuesday evening. GM (10-5) will play at top-seeded Cabrini in the title game on Saturday with a time TBA. The Griffins, who lead 5-3 at the break, yielded just one goal in the second half. With the teams tied at 3-3 late in the second, Gwynedd scored the next eight goals over a quarter and a half, with the final one coming with 2:57 left in the contest. The Pacers added the game's final tally, with just over a minute in the contest. Senior Nick Coan (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded a game-high six points on a career-high four goals and two assists. Junior Roy Bakeoven (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and sophomore Nathan Pendleton (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each had two scores as the Griffins will play in their second CSAC Championship in its four years of varsity competition. Junior goalie Ryley O'Keefe (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) anchored the defense, making 10 saves, six of which came in the fourth to help keep Marywood at bay. Goals from junior Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) late in the third helped brake a 3-3 deadlock. Belardo's goal came with 36 seconds remaining. That's when Coan answered the second half with two-straight scores, one coming on the man-up just four minutes into the third. He would cap the scoring for the Griffins in the fourth. Sam Trill led the Pacers (9-7) with two goals. GM outshot Marywood, 51-26, for the game including a 19-0 effort in the third. Junior Jonathan Figliola (Weston, Ct./Weston) secured 11-of-18 faceoffs. |
