Berry vs. Carthage

The Game Story:
<b>ROME, Ga. – </b> Max Smerka scored two goals for Berry, but the Vikings fell behind early and could not recover in a 19-7 loss to Carthage on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Ford Field.
<br/><br/>
Carthage zoomed out to a 6-0 lead before Smerka scored Berry's first goal with 1:44 left in the first quarter. By the time the buzzer sounded, Berry faced a 7-1 deficit heading into the second quarter.
<br/><br/>
The next period saw Berry quadruple its offensive output as it netted four scores, but it also surrendered four goals, making the score 11-5 at half.
<br/><br/>
In the third quarter, Carthage began to distance itself from Berry, outscoring the Vikings 7-0 in the frame and extending its lead to 18-5.
<br/><br/>
Smerka led Berry with two goals while Bryan Byers, Jack Chase, James Holekamp, CJ McRae, and Cal Supik each scored once apiece.
<br/><br/>
Keegan Bowman spearheaded Carthage's offense with eight goals, and Cory Childs added four.
<br/><br/>
Carthage dominated the faceoffs 22-7, and ground balls 60-32, helping it secure the victory.
<br/><br/>
Jordan Boreman made five saves in his lone period of action in goal for Berry. His backup, Brandon Sanders, stopped nine shots in three periods of play. Carthage goalie Spencer Curley earned the win and made seven saves overall. His replacement, James Fleming, stopped four shots on goal.

Berry will hit the road for its next game against Greensboro College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
