|The Game Story:|
|Dylan Burdick's goal with seven seconds remaining in the game spoiled Berry's comeback bid and gave Ferrum a 9-8 victory over the Vikings in a men's lacrosse game at Berry's Ford Field Saturday afternoon.|
The Vikings trailed 8-3 heading into the fourth period, but rattled off five straight goals, eventually tying the score when Max Smerka scored on an assist from Bryan Byers with 1:51 left in the game as the Vikings' bench erupted.
But the celebration was short lived, as Burdick buried the game winner just moments before the final buzzer sounded.
It was a wild finish to a wild game that saw momentum shift back and forth throughout the second half.
Smerka scored the second of his three goals just over two minutes into the second half, tying the score 3-3. But Smith scored three minutes later to put the Panthers back ahead and start a five minute, 38 second stretch in which Ferrum scored five straight goals to take an 8-3 advantage with 3:42 remaining in the third period.
But Berry would hold the Panthers scoreless for the next 18:35 as the pendulum began to swing in the Vikings' favor.
Berry's Cory Hall scored four goals in less than 12 minutes to start the final period, pulling the Vikings to within a goal. Just 1:25 later, Smerka found the net for the game-tying goal.
Hall's four goals were the most by a Viking Saturday. Along with Smerka's three goals, Grant Philips also scored once for Berry.
Burdick led Ferrum with three goals.
Berry goalie Jordan Boreman finished with 14 saves. Ferrum's Damian Pulos had 12.
The Vikings are scheduled to return to action April 7, when they host Huntingdon at 1 p.m.
