|The Hanover College men’s lacrosse squad closed the home portion of its schedule with a 15-5 victory against Elmhurst College (Ill.). The Midwest Lacrosse Conference tilt was played Saturday, April 20, at L.S. Ayres Field.|
Sophomore attacker Nick Hermes (Grayslake, Ill.) scored five goals, while sophomore attacker Matt Weber (Centerville, Ohio) and sophomore midfielder Luke Karnick (Indianapolis, Ind.) added three apiece for Hanover, now 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the MLC.
The Panthers, fueled by three goals in a two-minute span, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Hermes netted two of his goals in the first six minutes of action.
Junior attacker Chris Baney (Lexington, Ky.) scored in the opening minute of the second frame and Hanover eventually stretched the margin to 9-0 at halftime.
The lead increased to 10-0 after Weber scored in the first minute of the third period. Elmhurst (2-8; 1-6 MLC) rallied with four of the next five goals to climb within 11-4 late in the stanza.
Baney scored with 8.5 seconds left in the third quarter and Karnick, who also had a career-high four assists, netted his third goal early in the fourth period to boost the Panthers' cushion to 13-4.
Hermes scored twice in the five final minutes to seal the win.
Hanover converted 11-of-13 clears and earned 21-of-24 face-offs.
Sophomore midfielder Tim Gruber (Cincinnati, Ohio) won 18-of-21 face-offs and led the Panthers with a team-season-high 10 ground balls.
Hanover posted a 56-19 advantage in shots, including 15 by Karnick and 11 from Weber.
