|The Game Story:|
|The Aurora University men's lacrosse team claimed its first Midwest Lacrosse Conference tournament title in the program's brief three-year history. The #1 seeded Spartans took down the #2 seeded|
Carthage College Red Men in convincing fashion by a score of 13-3 Saturday afternoon at AU's Vago Field.
The Red Men took an early lead as Timothy Francis was able to find the back of the net just 2:27 into the game.
AU was able to to answer as Danny Loyall buried his 42nd goal of the season at the 8:14 mark of the first quarter. However, Carthage managed to take the lead again at 2-1 just four minutes later.
This was Carthage's last goal for some time as the Spartans were able to put together a 4-0 to take them from the final four minutes of the first quarter all the way up until halftime. AU's Max Obriecht struck
twice during this run, with other two tallies coming courtesy of Andrew Schoessel and Nolan Miller. Giving the Spartans a 5-2 lead going into the break
The Red Men came out to score the first goal of the second half just over two minutes into the half on a man up opportunity. AU came back to answer with their own man up goal just 1:59 later from Jordan Williams.
The Spartans rippled the net one more time before the third quarter ended as Schoessel was able to score his second of the day to give AU a 7-3 lead.
AU erased all hope for Carthage once the fourth quarter started with Garrett Rosiek scoring just 10
seconds into the period on an assist from Jack Barry. Rosiek followed his goal up with another just 35 seconds later. The final dagger came off the stick of Obriecht as he completed his hat trick only six seconds after Rosiek's second goal, giving the Spartans three goals in the opening 51 seconds of the fourth quarter to make it 10-3 in favor of the Spartans.
Justin Bose, Obriecht, and Miller all added on to AU lead during the fourth quarter to make the final 13-3, AU.
Spartan goalie Adam Holka led the spectacular defensive effort with 11 saves on just 14 shots to earn himself the win. Offensively AU was led by Obriecht (four goals) and Rosiek (two goals, two assists) with four points a piece.
With the win, AU is the 2013 Midwest Lacrosse Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions
The Spartans will advance to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. AU men's lacrosse now holds a 15-3 overall record and 10-0 in the MLC.
