|Demorest, GA - An early 5-3 lead didn't hold for the Lions, as they watched Ferrum College shut them out 7-0 in the second en route to an 18-9 loss at home. Piedmont's loss evens its record to 2-2 on the season. The visiting Panthers doubled up on the Lions, outscoring them 8-4 in the second half.|
Just 28 seconds in Piedmont put a goal on the board as Patrick Ammons scored off a pass from Max Rowse. Ammons then returned the favor as Rowse scored with 10:14 still on the clock in the opening period, putting the men up 2-0. Ferrum bounced back with a trio of goals to take its first lead before Spencer Ortis knotted the game at three with a goal off a pass from Nicholas Green as Piedmont was playing with a man-up. Green then scored the go-ahead goal, unassisted to give PC a slim 4-3 lead. Steve Blanchard capped the period with a goal with 22 seconds on the board to stretch the lead to 5-3 going into the second quarter.
The second period was all Ferrum, as the Panthers stormed back with a seven-goal period, leaving the host team reeling 10-5 going into the break. Rowse appeared to give the Lions a boost with a goal just 16 seconds into the third, narrowing the deficit to four. However, the Panthers negated the goal less than 40 seconds later on an unassisted goal.
A powerplay goal by the visitors doubled the lead over the Lions, 14-7 before they added two more to go into the final stanza up 18-6. John Sumner Gantz's late goal in the fourth wasn't enough as the host team had allowed two unanswered goals earlier in the period. Blanchard, Rowse and Gantz each tallied two goals in the loss, while Gantz added nine ground balls. Piedmont stands at an even 2-2 and return to action at Birmingham-Southern Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
