|The Game Story:|
|DEFIANCE, Ohio – On a cold and blustery spring break afternoon, the Defiance College men’s lacrosse program hosted the Bison of Bethany College in a battle of first-year programs, both searching for their first win. The Purple and Gold came up just short on the day, as the Bison escaped with a hard-fought 7-5 victory.|
Defiance wasted no time getting into the scoring column to start the game, as freshman Chase Mallory scored his first goal of the season with just over two minutes gone by in the first to put DC up 1-0.
After the opening goal from the Jackets, Bethany settled into the game and started to find its rhythm. The Bison managed to strike twice in a two-minute span to grab a 2-1 advantage with five minutes remaining in the first quarter, and held on to the lead going into the second stanza.
The Purple and Gold responded with a scoring flurry of its own to begin the second, as Tyler Clark and James Lopez each netted his second goal of the season to put the Jackets back on top at 3-2 with 9:40 left until the half.
Bethany’s Kyle Arrington answered for the Bison just thirty seconds after Defiance took the lead to knot the game back up at 3-3, which was the score the teams took into the halftime break.
Defiance came out of the intermission looking to score, as the Purple and Gold attack rifled a number of shots at the Bethany net, but none managed to go in and the score remained deadlocked at 3-3.
With less than nine minutes left in the third, the Bison’s Trey Moore scored on the team’s first shot of the half to put Bethany up 4-3.
The Yellow Jackets once again showed their grit and determination and rallied to tie the game at 4-4 when Dylan Textor scored his first goal of the season with 2:34 remaining in the third frame, but the Jackets would not be even for long. Bethany managed to score with 31 ticks left in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, the Bison received a crucial insurance goal from Moore, his second on the afternoon, to give Bethany a much-needed two goal cushion with just under eight and a half minutes left in the game.
After the goal, Defiance immediately ran down the field and slashed the deficit back to one, as Textor scored his second goal of the game and made the score 6-5 with eight minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets this would be the squad’s last goal of the afternoon, as Bethany tacked on one more score in the waning minutes to win by a final of 7-5.
The loss moves DC’s record to 0-4 on the season. The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, March 16, as the team hosts Olivet College in a non-conference matchup. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Justin F. Coressel Stadium.
