Long Island Lizards vs. Bridgeport Barrage

The Game Story:
The Long Island Lizards (4-1) defeated the Bridgeport Barrage (0-5), 23-19, in front of 4,336 fans at Mitchel Field. Jay Jalbert led the offense with seven goals, while Kevin Lowe tied an MLL record with six assists. Tim Goettelmann also had four goals, while Scott Doyle was impressive in his debut, with two goals, including a two-pointer.

The 23 points scored by the Lizards ties a league record, while the 42 combined points set a new league record, surpassing the past mark of 41, when the Lizards defeated the Barrage, 21-20 in overtime in 2002.

Long Island started in control of the game, with A.J. Haugen and Jay Jalbert each scoring to put the Lizards up 2-0 only 26 seconds in. However, the Barrage came back, with Doug Shanahan scoring two goals to tie it up, and Blake Miller scoring to give Bridgeport a 3-2 lead. The teams traded goals, until Roy Colsey scored two straight, including a two-pointer. Bridgeport led 9-5 after the first quarter. Long Island scored eight of the following nine goals, and outscored Bridgeport 10-4 in the second to take a 15-13 lead into the half.

Blake Miller and Dan Denihan quickly tied it up in the third, and the teams traded goals throughout the quarter, with the teams tied at 18 with fifteen minutes to play. However, the Lizards scored three goals straight to put Bridgeport away in the final quarter.

Brian Dougherty had three saves before being pulled due to a bruised shoulder after the first quarter. Nick Murtha was impressive in relief with 14 saves.

The Lizards meet the Boston Cannons (2-3) next Sunday for the first time this season. The division rivals faceoff at 6:00 PM. The Barrage have a week off before playing Long Island again on July 12th, at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard (ESPN2).
