|The Game Story:|
| HERSHEY, PA, June 22 - Behind a solid defensive effort, the Rochester
Rattlers silenced a potent New Jersey Pride offense holding them to only
seven goals. With the 15-7 loss, the Pride drop to 1-3, while the Rattlers
improve to 1-2 on the season.
Rochester attackman Ryan Powell returned to Major League Lacrosse with a vengeance. In his first game back since having knee surgery, Powell began an uncontested nine goal rampage at the end of the second half. The tear continued well into the fourth quarter, where he added his sixth goal and second assist of the night. Unrelenting however, the Pride ended the game with the final two scores of the evening, on shots from Princeton graduates Jon Hess and Jesse Hubbard.
A relatively close game coming out of the half, Rochester opened the flood gates in the third quarter. Holding the Pride scoreless through the fifteen minutes of play, the Rattlers were able to improve their lead to seven, due largely in part to the offensive talents of Powell. He added to his already impressive return with two goals and an assist.
Rochester's Josh Bergey started the game off quickly with a goal just forty-five seconds in. But both sides were shutdown after an MLL worthy behind the back assist from New Jersey's Jay Jalbert to Hubbard, who then performed the first stunning dive shot of the game. With the game even one all, neither team scored till just under five minutes in the half. Rochester then cranked out a three goal run. The streak included a cage wrapping dive by Powell, and a one handed stretch from Josh Coffman, who finished the night with two goals and an assist. New Jersey pulled within one in the closing minutes of the quarter, after a Jalbert goal, and a quick follow-up from Hess with just under thirty seconds on the clock.
The Rattlers regained their multiple goal lead early in the second quarter off an unassisted shot from Tim Soudan. And after several minutes of strong defensive efforts on both teams' part, Rochester would eventually tack on two more. The Pride cut the lead in half when outstanding defensive play by Christian Cook and Reid Jackson forced Ryan Powell out of bounce. The turnover resulted in an unassisted David Curry goal. Not thirty seconds later, Matt Caione added one of his own, placing the ball perfectly between Rochester goalie Brian Dougherty and the right post. Despite the late efforts, Rochester would still take a three goal lead into the locker room.
The Pride will return to Commerce Bank Park in Bridgewater, N.J., this Thursday, June 27th, to avenge tonight's loss against the Rattlers. The two will once again meet for the second of four scheduled meetings this season. Game time is set for 7:30pm
