UAlbany (4-2) reversed a 2-1 deficit in the second quarter with four consecutive goals over a two-minute-and-five second span. Frank Resetarits scored back-to-back 41 seconds apart to give his team the lead. He found the net off a rebound for a 3-2 advantage after his first shot was turned away by Big Green goalkeeper Andrew Goldstein.
Chris Martocchia converted in a man-advantage situtation with 53 seconds left before halftime. Luke Daquino then scored from the top of the crease off Thomson’s feed 12 seconds later after Jordan Levine won the faceoff to complete the outburst.
Dartmouth (3-2) closed within one goal on two occasions in the third quarter, including 6-5 with 4:27 left in the period. Brad Heritage curled in the middle of the field and blasted a shot from the right side off Ben Grinnell’s pass. The Great Danes then pushed out to a three-goal lead. Thomson made a diving shot following a scramble for a loose ball in front of the cage. Bakary Janneh connected on a drive from the right with 11:29 left in the fourth quarter.
The Big Green, who defeated No. 4 Maryland in their last outing one week ago, would make another run at the lead. Junior attacker Jamie Coffin, who led all scorers with five goals, tallied his 15th of the season midway through the stanza. Ryan Danehy closed the gap to 8-7 on an extra-man goal, a low 15-yard shot, with 1:59 to play.
The Great Danes, who knocked off their second top-20 team this season after edging Massachusetts on March 15, decided the outcome when Thomson scored his 15th goal of the year off Levine’s crossing pass 24 seconds later. Daquino started the play by forcing a turnover at midfield with a stick-check.
"That’s as good a win as we have had here," UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. "This team is starting to find its way. We didn’t start well and were not running in the first part of the game, but we found a way to work through it. Our conference (America East) has had some big wins this season, and we are gaining respect."
UAlbany goalkeeper Kevin Rae made 15 saves, including eight in the final period. Martocchia and Resetarits each finished with a pair of goals. Dartmouth’s Goldstein stopped nine shots. |
