The Dragons, who are No. 14 in both the USILA and Nike/Inside Lacrosse national polls, posted their sixth consecutive win.
Garling, a junior attacker, snapped a 5-5 deadlock in the final period with his fourth goal of the season. He took a crossing pass from Joe Wojciechowski and sent a blast from the left side inside the far post. Drexel (6-1) upped its lead to 7-5 with 2:18 to play when senior attack Andrew Chapman tallied his third goal of the game by using a high-to-low shooting motion from the right.
UAlbany (0-5) closed the gap when Mike Ammann placed a shot to the right of Drexel goalkeeper Bruce Bickford with 9.7 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, the Great Danes won the face-off but Brian Caufield could not get off an attempt at the cage when he mishandled Jordan Levine’s pass from the midfield.
The Great Danes, who dropped their fourth straight one-goal decision, reversed a 3-2 deficit in the second quarter to take a halftime lead. Steve Ammann, who had two goals and one assist, connected on a drive from the left when his shot went off the goalkeeper’s stick. Caufield, a freshman, put his team ahead with 27.6 seconds left in the quarter by finishing off a fastbreak that originated on a save by Brett Queener in the defensive half of the field.
The Dragons, whose lone loss came in the opener against Virginia, regained the lead with a pair of goals 23 seconds apart in the third stanza. Colin Ambler, who scored twice, cut to the top of the crease to convert a feed from Jon Van Houten in an extra-man situation. After winning the face-off, Kevin Dart bounced a low shot into the left corner for a 5-4 advantage. UAlbany midfielder Kyle Crotty tied the contest with 5:41 left in the stanza on an extra-man goal.
“We had opportunities but that’s the way it has been going to this point,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team hit the crossbar after winning the opening face-off in the first quarter. “We have lost to five very good teams. Even though we could be sharper, I can’t fault our effort. Our movement on offense has not translated from the practice field to the game.”
Drexel goalkeeper Bruce Bickford made eight of his nine saves in the opening half, while Queener stopped seven shots. Caufield finished with one goal and two assists for the Great Danes, who had won their home debut in each of the previous six seasons. |
