Great Danes Set School's Division I Single-Game Scoring Record
Albany, N.Y. - Chris Martocchia scored a career-high five goals, and Frank
Resetarits and Merrick Thomson each scored four times, as UAlbany won its
fourth consecutive America East Conference opener with a 25-9 victory over
Hartford on Saturday evening at Rensselaer's Harkness Field.
UAlbany (3-2, AE 1-0) rattled off nine unanswered goals to start the
game. Martocchia scored twice in the opening five minutes by hitting the
lower left corner off a drive and then finding the net from the left side on
an inside roll. Luke Daquino, who totaled three goals and set the school's
single-game record with eight assists, scored twice and set up three others
in the opening period. Thomson's fastbreak goal completed the outburst with
1:12 left in the stanza.
The Great Danes, who were coming off an 8-4 non-league loss to Drexel
in their last outing six days ago, rolled to a commanding 15-2 halftime
lead. Martocchia tallied back-to-back goals 13 seconds apart in the second
quarter. He rifled a shot inside the right post in a man-advantage
situation and then finished off Daquino's pass ahead off the following
faceoff.
"We made some changes to our offense," said Daquino, who broke a
UAlbany assist record that had been shared by two players for nearly 15
years. "We worked the ball better and had more movement. This was a
conference game, so we knew we had to step up and start playing like a
champion."
UAlbany goalkeeper Kevin Rae made 13 saves in three quarters of play
between the pipes, while sophomore attacker Eric Wolf added three goals and
two assists. The Great Danes, who have captured the last two America East
championships, established a team single-game scoring mark at the Division I
level. UAlbany previously tallied 24 goals against Wagner on April 30,
2000.
Junior midfielder Matt Holman led Hartford (1-4, AE 0-1) with three
goals, while Ryan Curran had one goals and three assists.
