The Game Story:
PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 1956 season with a 14-7 victory over Albany (1-2) today at the Rutgers Astroturf Field. Seniors Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ) and Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) led the way with four goals apiece, while sophomore Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) dished out a career high four assists.

Rutgers got off to a fast start, shutting out the Great Danes in the first quarter while taking a 4-0 lead. Springer started the scoring with a goal 1:54 into the game, off a pass from junior Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ). Blomquist assisted on the next two goals, by Duca (9:22) and sophomore John Flanagan (Smithtown, NJ) (6:28). Duca followed with his second goal with 4:45 left in the quarter to give the Scarlet Knights the 4-0 lead.

Springer gave RU a 5-0 lead with his second goal of the game with 11:22 left in the second quarter, before Albany finally got on the board when Luke Daquino scored at the 9:00 mark to cut the lead to 5-1. Apel and Springer added two consecutive goals to give Rutgers a 7-1 lead, as the Scarlet Knights went into halftime with an 8-3 lead.

Albany cut the lead to 10-6 entering the fourth quarter by outscoring RU 3-2 in the third, but the Great Danes would not get any closer as Rutgers scored three consecutive goals to start the fourth to push the lead to 13-6.

Freshman goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 15 saves in the game and now owns a goals against average of 5.67 and a save percentage of .710.

With his four assists against the Great Danes, Blomquist leads the team with 17 points (4 G, 13 A), while junior Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) scored two goals in the game and leads the team with 12 this season.

Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, March 15, at ECAC rival Navy. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
