| The Game Story: | Albany, N.Y. – Merrick Thomson scored three goals and goalkeeper Brett Queener tied a career-high with 18 saves, as UAlbany ended a three-game losing streak with a 7-5 non-league victory over Yale on Thursday, April 13 at John Fallon Field.
UAlbany (5-5) used a three-goal third quarter to break a 3-3 halftime deadlock. Frank Resetarits fired a shot into the top right corner to give his team the lead with 9:54 left in the period. After Queener stopped Yale’s Tyler Casertano in a one-on-one situation following a clear, Thomson added his third goal of the game for a 5-3 advantage on his team’s next possession.
Yale (5-6) closed within one goal on two occasions, including 6-5 with 9:57 to play in the final stanza. Freshman attacker Michael Karwoski, who scored twice, drove from behind the cage and sent a shot into the lower right corner.
The Great Danes, who had lost their previous three games by a combined six goals, sealed the outcome when Jim Stankard connected on a blast from right of the cage with 2:08 remaining. Resetarits set up Stankard in the man-advantage situation.
UAlbany’s Thomson scored back-to-back goals 41 seconds apart for a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. His second goal in that sequence came on an extra-man play, as he converted a rebound off Corey Small’s initial shot. The Bulldogs, who had won their previous contests against Holy Cross and Brown, drew even with one second remaining before halftime when Karwoski drove from around the back side.
"We gave a great effort coming off those three losses," said UAlbany's Scott Marr, whose team returns to conference action on Saturday against Vermont at home. "Our goaltender stood on his head with some excellent saves and Jordan Levine gave us lots of possessions with his play in the midfield."
Queener, who has made double-figure saves in nine games this season, stopped five shots in both the third and fourth periods. Steve Ammann matched a career-best three points with one goal and two assists for the second straight game. Yale’s George Carafides had eight of his 10 saves in the opening half. |
