| The Game Story: | Albany, N.Y. - Frank Resetarits scored five goals and Merrick Thomson added four in leading UAlbany to a 20-9 America East Conference win over Binghamton in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday, April 29 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes earned the No. 3 seed for next week’s America East postseason tournament with the victory. UAlbany meets Stony Brook in the semifinal round.
Binghamton (7-7, AE 2-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with just four minutes elapsed in the contest. Jake Boyce scored off the opening face-off before Rob Williams converted an underhanded shot. Nate Kerstein completed that outburst when he connected from the left side in a man-advantage situation.
UAlbany (7-6, AE 3-2) regrouped by connecting on nine of its next 14 shots to take a 9-3 halftime lead. Resetarits, a junior who added a three assists for a career-high eight points, drew his team even at three apiece when he scored from the top of the crease with 1:53 left in the first quarter.
The Great Danes, who were coming off a 14-13 overtime loss to nationally-ranked Syracuse eight days ago, dominated the second period with six unanswered goals. Jim Stankard’s man-up goal put his team on top for good. Matthew Green and Jordan Levine then scored nine seconds apart for a 6-3 advantage. Resetarits netted a shot in transition after Levine dodged two defenders to finish off that run with 2:49 left before the intermission.
Thomson, a junior attacker, fueled a four-goal stretch that pushed the margin to 13-3 in the opening five minutes of the third period. In that string of goals, goalkeeper Brett Queener carried the ball on a fastbreak that ended with Resetarits setting up Thomson in stride. Thomson finished off another crossing pass from Resetarits before Levine followed 14 seconds later after gaining possession on the subsequent face-off.
“We are starting to peak at the right time,” said Resetarits, who like Martocchia reached the 150-mark for his career during the game. “We’ve gone through a lot of adversity this year. By taking Syracuse to overtime and winning tonight, we have the ability to beat anyone if we stick together.
Levine, a sophomore midfielder, also had a career-high in points with three goals and two assists. Senior Chris Martocchia, who was making his final home appearance, scored twice for the Great Danes, who tied a season-high in goals scored.
Williams finished with two goals and one assist for the Bearcats, who had beaten two top-20 opponents this season. Kevin Joy and Jeff Santucci added two goals apiece.
“We are hitting our stride at tournament time,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr offered. “This is a great way to go into the postseason. We have a couple of seniors that want to go out as winners.” |
