with 47 seconds left in overtime to lift the Black Knights to a 12-11 victory
over the Denver Pioneers in their home opener at Shea Stadium Saturday
afternoon. The win evens Army's record at 1-1 on the season.
The 20th-ranked Black Knights trailed Denver 11-9 with two minutes left in the
fourth quarter, but sophomore attackman Jeff Bryan pulled Army within one
with 1:57 remaining and senior Jimmy Vlahakis knotted things up with a marker
with 1:23 to go.
The Black Knights won the face-off in overtime and controlled possession of
the ball for the entire four minutes. Ryan scored the game-winner off a running
start from outside the offensive box. The Clifton Park native made two nice
dodges to elude his defender and jumped in the air rifling a shot past Denver
goalie Jeff Nunziato.
The win was the first of the season for Army and the 290th of head coach Jack
Emmer's career, tying him with former Syracuse legend Roy Simmons Jr. for
second place on the all-time list of Division I victories.
Army All-American Tim Pearson led the Black Knights in scoring with one goal
and four assists. Vlahakis tied his career high with three goals on the afternoon.
Bryan had two goals and two assists.
Army goaltender Dominik Nogic made eight saves, and Nunziato made 11 stops
for the visiting Pioneers, who fell to 1-1 on the year.
The game went back and forth for much of the first three quarters, with a
two-goal lead the largest either side could build. The Black Knights fell behind
5-3 late in the first quarter, when an errant pass while trying to clear the ball,
missed the target and bounced into an open net. Just 32 seconds later, Denver
capitalized on another miscue when Pioneers' attackman Jeff Biggs intercepted a
pass on a clearing attempt and fired the ball into an open net from the top of
the offensive box.
Denver took a 10-8 lead in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals to
erase an 8-7 deficit. The 8-7 advantage was the only time Army held the lead
until Ryan's overtime marker.
The Black Knights will return to action next Saturday afternoon when they host
Patriot League rival Hobart at Shea Stadium. Face-off is set for 1:30 p.m. |
