However, No. 14 Hofstra answered with the eventual game-winner eight seconds after the Black Knights' equalizer to pull out a 12-11 victory at rain-soaked Shea Stadium Wednesday night.
Trailing 11-8 with seven minutes left in the contest, Army's John Ryan started the comeback by beating Hofstra goalie Matt Southard off a feed from Jeff Bryan. Chris Woods then drew the hosts to within one just over a minute later, tucking the ball into the bottom far corner while being knocked to the ground as he came around the left side of the cage. Ryan then tallied his second of the quarter with 4:12 left to even things up 11-11.
Hofstra (4-3) quickly answered as fifth-year senior Joe Kostolansky fired a shot past Army goalie Tom LeRoux eight seconds later. The marker proved to be the game-winner as the Black Knights (3-4) could not capitalize on a couple of opportunities with under two minutes to go.
"(That goal) was tremendous," Hofstra head coach John Danowski said. "Army battled back admirably. The goal was very timely and really gave our squad a lift."
Kostolansky led all scorers with four goals for the visitors. Army's John Walker tied a career high with three goals to lead the hosts. Army co-captains Mike Kamon and Chris Woods each had two goals as did Ryan.
Southard registered 15 saves on 34 shots for the Pride. LeRoux stopped 10 shots in relief of starter Matt Darak. LeRoux relieved Darak with 9:34 left in the first half after Hofstra had jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Darak was credited with six saves in a little over 20 minutes of work.
Army held a 2-1 lead early in the contest before Hofstra rattled off seven of the next eight goals to chase Darak and open up an 8-3 advantage. The Black Knights scored the final three goals of the first half to close to within two at the break.
"It was good to see our team regroup and get back into the game in the second half," Army head coach Jack Emmer said. "We just made too many mistakes in the first half. We weren't ready to play."
The Black Knights will return to action Tue., April 1 when Patriot League rival Lehigh visits Shea Stadium for a 7 p.m. faceoff. That will be Emmer's next opportunity for win No. 301 that would put him atop the NCAA's all-time wins list. |
